Read our suggestions for 10 things to do in Malaga, Spain, points of interest.

Malaga, Spain – Points Of Interest

Malaga, Costa del Sol in Spain was for me synonymous with a built-up coast full of skyscrapers, retired Brits and Germans and overcrowded beaches. But I had to revise my prejudices! Malaga is a well-maintained city and offers points of interest for old and young visitors.

Holidays in Spain: Cheap flights from most of the European towns and affordable accommodation make it possible. Costa del Sol in shoulder season? It's great!

Top Things To Do In Malaga, Spain

After a house sit of two weeks in the foothills of the Andalusian mountains, a tour to Granada and over the beautiful Sierra Nevada via an old mountain pass road, we spent just one day in Malaga, in the car-free city center. That was a mistake, it was too short!

1. Visit The City Of Malaga, Spain

Shopping in the City of Malaga, Spain

What a handsome, ancient nucleus of a town with the cleanest port I’ve ever seen and a vast stretch of beach just a short walk from the main shopping area.

As in other busy city centers, you must be aware of pickpockets.

2. Take A Walk Along The Port Of Malaga

The area along the port of Malaga is clean and tidy with a beautiful promenade where trees provide shade while enjoying gardens on one side and the view of the sea on the other side.

3. Enjoy Wine And Tapas At The Harbor

Around the corner in direction of the beach, restaurants, and bars invite one to enjoy wine with tapas and local specialties.

4. Take A Sunbath At The Beach

Seldom you’ll find such a beautiful beach in a large a city as in Malaga. Get your costume out and let the sun make you forget the cold in northern Europe, whereas, in Malaga, Costa del Sol, the temperatures are pleasant even in winter.

5. Walk Up To The Gibralfaro Castle of Malaga

The city is overlooked by the Gibralfaro Castle of Malaga which sight we first enjoyed from the flowery gardens aligning the promenade and streets of the city before we climbed the steep path up to the ancient ruins. The views over the city are breathtaking! Luckily there was a city bus to take us down to the center.

6. Book A Horse Carriage To Ride Around Malaga Centre

To get around Malaga Centre in a horse carriage gives a pleasant break for weary feet.

In May, Jacaranda trees adorned several streets of Málaga and were full in bloom while the fallen blossoms tinted the pavements in pretty lilac.

7. Visit Plaza De Toros De La Malagueta

The Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta was built in 1874 and the first bullfight took place on 11th June 1876. We wouldn’t like to experience a bullfight but the architecture of the bullring and the museum is well worth a visit.

 8. Find Great Self-Catering Accommodation in Malaga

We had good luck this time in finding suitable accommodation – a most comfortable, self-catering apartment, luxuriously decorated, quiet and central. A bargain for what it offered.

9. Hire A Car In Malaga

To visit the surrounding famous Andalusian white villages you will have to hire a car. The only thing which went almost wrong during our travels in Andalusia, Spain: Cheap car hire places may attempt to try to rip you off with improper access claims. Take care and rather take a more established, internationally known company (never – I mean NEVER – take Firefly! I’ve never experienced such indecent and unfair treatment as by this company before).

Tip: Take photographs of every bump or scratch before leaving.

By the way: Why not find out about the beautiful island of Lanzarote!
