Encounter With Whale Mum And Baby

We’d hiked about half of the seven-kilometer trail which led mainly through the dunes of De Mond Nature Reserve before arriving at the beach with the wind pumping and the sun shining mercilessly on our heads.

Whales like the Southern Right Whale migrate from the cold Antarctic to the warmer waters of the South African coast to breed before returning to the Antarctic summer.

Endless Beach At De Mond

We walked towards a spot where there was a shipwreck but it was only visible with stormy weather as explained in the pamphlet. This coastline of South Africa is famous for its vicious weather conditions which resulted in many vessels losing their battle against nature.

But it wasn’t the shipwreck we spotted but a Southern right whale mum with it’s baby playing around in the sea just a few hundred meters offshore. We settled on a dune and watched their joyful moves for quite a while before the two of them headed off towards the most southerly tip of Africa.

Calf Puts Head On Whale Mother

De Mond Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa
At Cape Agulhas the Indian Ocean meets the colder and fish rich currents of the Atlantic Ocean, which is the reason, why whales are often spotted at the whale coast near Hermanus, only a two hours drive from Cape Town, South Africa.

The following video shows mother whale and calf playing with each other. If you hang in till the end of the two-minute clip you will watch the calf put his head on the body of its mother.
I could only imagine the massive bodies under water as I followed the small flipper of the calf popping up out of the water and the mother turning over and around the baby.
