Keukenhof season runs from 24 March to 15 May 2022. Best time for the spring flower exhibition, which this year has the motto: “Flower Classics”. Many people are expected in these weeks, although not as many as before Corona when there were regularly over 1 million visitors. If possible, don’t plan your visit on a weekend or a public holiday.

Keukenhof Flower Park is very well equipped for people with walking disabilities. You can rent wheelchairs free of charge for a deposit of 20 €, but you should reserve them in advance. There are many toilets for the disabled.

Dogs are allowed on the paths between the Keukenhof flower fields, but on a leash but not in pavilions and restaurants. However, this restriction does not apply to guide dogs. You will receive dog waste bags at the entrance.

Keukenhof Flowerparade 2022
The Keukenhof Flower Parade Holland 2022 (Bloemencorso) will take place on the 23th of April. It is a parade of about 40 kilometers from Noordwijk (start at 9.30 a.m.) to Haarlem. Colorful cars decorated with flowers move slowly under cheerful music. There are many possibilities to watch the parade along the way and of course also at the Keukenhof. However, with tens of thousands of visitors every year it gets a bit crowded!

Haarlem is my secret tip if Amsterdam is too touristy for you. Book a bike tour to Haarlem where you can discover the city's rich history and highlights.
On the evening of 22 April 2022, you can already see the illuminated cars in Noordwijkerhout. There will be a small parade through the village.
On Sunday, April 24th, all cars can be seen in Haarlem.

Netherlands Flower Festival 2022: Noordoostpolder
The Tulip Festival Amsterdam 2022: Noordoostpolder is expected to take place from mid April to the first week of May. During this time, many activities will be organized along the largest tulip fields in Noordoostpolder east of the Ijsselmeer near Emmeloord, in addition to hiking, cycling and car routes.
Special cycle routes, hikes and carriage rides lead along the fields of flowers. The car route also passes the Tulip Information Centre. There are also beautiful gardens open to the public.
The Tulip Route in Noordoostpolder is the longest continuous route in the Netherlands. Most of the bulbs in the Netherlands are grown here.

Holland Flower Festival In The Height Of Tulip Season, Netherlands
During the week of the Keukenhof Flower Parade 2022, Noordwijkerhout organizes the successful Flower Festival Holland in the monumental White Church under the motto “Flower Classics”. Open daily from 10.00 to 17.00. Admission is free.

Tulip fields can be found almost everywhere in Holland. The main growing areas are in Noordoostpolder in the province of Flevoland. Further cultivation areas can be found in North Holland up to the Wadden island Texel and in the south of the country in Zeeland.

The original cultivation area lies in the Bollenstreek south of Amsterdam near Leiden, Haarlem, and Noordwijk.

Millions of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths bloom in the Bollenstreek every year in all colors. On the flower map, you will find the fields. Click on them to see how far the flowers are already in bloom! In the Bollenstreek region (flower bulb region in Dutch) the flower parade Holland 2022 takes place.
Car and bicycle tours of 5 to 60 kilometers in length lead along the tulip fields. There is a starting point on the A44 motorway in Oegstgeest. It is best to go by bike because you can smell the flowers and take your time. Other starting points for the bike tour are Noordwijkerhout and Keukenhof.

The average temperature in Holland in April is 8ºC with about 12 rainy days. In May the thermometer already rises to 12ºC, but the rainy days stay on average at 12 days. Rainproof comfortable clothes, which you can easily stow in your backpack, are the order of the day.
Where to see tulips in Amsterdam?
Crocuses and daffodils open the season in March. Between mid-April and mid-May the tulip bloom in Holland will shift depending on weather conditions. It’s the best travel time to see the canals and richly decorated houses.

The Keukenhof – Amsterdam distance is about 36 kilometers. By public transport, you can travel a little more than an hour, by car about 50 minutes depending on the traffic. Schiphol is 22 kilometers away. Keukenhof can be reached by train from Schiphol in 40 minutes and by car in less than half an hour.

A direct Keukenhof Express runs from Schiphol Airport and Leiden Central Station to Keukenhof without a stopover. From Haarlem (bus 50), and from Katwijk, Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout bus 90 also goes directly to Keukenhof.

Insider tip: take the train from Leiden to Amsterdam. The train runs directly through the tulip fields!
Holland Tulip Festival By Car – Parking Keukenhof
The traffic routes through the Netherlands are very well developed, and despite the high population density of the Netherlands, you can get from A to B relatively quickly. However, this is not the case during rush hours, and during festivals such as the Flower Parade, when crowds are expected.
You can find rental cars at Schiphol Airport and in all major cities. Reserve your rental car here.
Keukenhof is located between Amsterdam and The Hague and is easily accessible via the A4 motorway (Nieuw-Vennep exit) and the A44 motorway (Lisse exit 3). Follow the signs to “Keukenhof”.
Large parking spaces for cars and buses are available, there can sometimes be traffic jams on the access road, especially at Easter and at the Keukenhof Flower Parade 2022 weekend. The parking fee is 6.00 €. Ride like the Dutch by bike or public bus!
With your own car or a rental car, you are flexible, but you may be stuck in traffic jams now and then. The public transport network is very well developed, so there is nothing to stop you from traveling to Holland by plane, train or bus.

The Tulip, Amsterdam’s Most Precious Flower, And Daffodils
The Dutch plant tulips in large fields to obtain tulip bulbs for export. The tulips in the tulip fields are not about the flower, but about the bulbs. The flowers are mown at the end of May after the tulip season so that the power remains in the tulip bulb.
In summer the tulip bulbs are taken out of the ground, cleaned and dried. In late summer the best tulip bulbs are for sale. The tulips for flower sales grow in greenhouses, where they are protected from the weather.
Daffodils are among the first spring flowers to adorn the landscape with their first yellow spots. With the opening of the Keukenhof, you will be able to find them earlier than the tulip. The natural habitat of wild daffodils is Northwest Africa and Southwest Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Daffodils and tulips are welcome heralds of spring in most European gardens.

Throughout the year you can see flowers at the tulip auction in Aalsmeer, which is the flower bulb center of Holland. Besides tulips, you will find millions of other flowers and plants of all kinds which are auctioned daily. On weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., visitors can view the largest flower auction in the world.
Arcen Castle Gardens
For me, one of the most beautiful experiences in the Netherlands was the visit to the castle gardens of Arcen. The romantic Holland fower park is open all year round and is particularly beautiful when the roses bloom (June). Read my article with photo gallery here.
History: Tulip Time In Amsterdam
Although the tulip actually comes from Turkey, Holland is known worldwide for it. The first bulbs reached the country at the end of the 16th century on ships from Constantinople (today Istanbul). In the Bollenstreek the Dutch started cultivating tulips in different colors and shapes. They were especially popular among the upper social classes.
With the increasing popularity of the ornamental plant, new forms of tulip trade were added. In the mid-1630s the price rose massively and speculators entered the market. Investors sold land and houses to invest in tulip bulbs. A tulip like “Semper Augustus” or “Viceroy” cost thousands of guilders. The so-called wind trade collapsed in 1637 and caused massive losses. In the case of irrational financial developments, one still speaks today of Tulipomania or tulip madness.
Best Time To Plant Tulips
Most likely you will buy tulip bulbs in Holland during your trip. Normally you buy tulip bulbs in late summer and plant them in autumn. But can you plant tulip bulbs in spring? Yes, you can. If you want to plant tulip bulbs in spring, you have to consider the following:
In spring the bulb bottom is already swollen. On some bulbs, you can already see the tip of the shoot. The bulbs must, therefore, be planted very carefully so as not to damage them.
The soil must, of course, be frost-free! The bulb cannot be pressed into the soil as in autumn. The soil must be carefully excavated and the bulb placed in it.

Confused About Holland Or Netherlands? Where’s Holland?
The Dutch often equate Holland with the Netherlands in their language. Where is Holland? It consists of the provinces of North Holland and South Holland and is part of the Netherlands. Holland borders the Northsea in the west and the IJsselmeer in the east.
The northern border is near the island of Texel and in the south, the delta of the rivers Rhine, Maas and Schelde form a natural border. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are all located in Holland. The majority of Holland lies below sea level.
